Patna, Aug 15 (NationPress) Migrant workers from Bihar residing in different states will soon experience enhanced ease in returning home during significant festivals such as Chhath, Diwali, Holi, and Durga Puja. The state government has unveiled a Rs 35.64 crore initiative aimed at improving transportation facilities.

During his Independence Day speech, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar highlighted that this initiative is designed to alleviate the annual surge and ticket shortages encountered by travelers returning to Bihar for the festive seasons.

Under this initiative, the government plans to introduce interstate bus transport services through a Public–Private Partnership (PPP). This will lead to the deployment of more buses, standardized fares, and enhanced connectivity between Bihar and key states like Delhi, Gurugram, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

“This will greatly alleviate issues related to inflated fares and the scarcity of bus tickets,” Kumar mentioned, expressing that the scheme is anticipated to commence operations prior to the festive season.

Every year, countless Biharis working outside the state encounter lengthy waits and exorbitant fares when trying to return home for celebrations.

The upcoming interstate service aims to facilitate this journey and ensure that festive homecomings are devoid of stress.

To incentivize operators, the government will extend grants of Rs 150 per seat during peak times and Rs 300 per seat during the offseason.

This initiative is expected to enhance the number and connectivity of buses operating between Bihar and major states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

The total projected expenditure over the span of five years stands at Rs 35.64 crore, supplemented by an additional 2 percent contingency fund of Rs 71.28 lakh, culminating in an overall cost of Rs 36.35 crore.

For the fiscal year 2025-26, Rs 7.27 crore will be sourced from the Bihar Contingency Fund.

Passenger associations have welcomed this initiative, stating it will help eliminate the persistent issues of ticket shortages and inflated fares during the festive rush.

The government is optimistic that this scheme will stabilize fares and significantly minimize travel inconveniences for those returning home for festive celebrations.

Point of View

The Bihar government's initiative to invest in interstate bus services reflects a proactive approach to addressing the longstanding issues faced by migrant workers.
