Bihar Sharif, Nov 1 (NationPress) The ‘Jeevika Didi’ kitchens in Bihar are doing much more than just providing meals; they are significantly altering the lives of women throughout the state, turning dreams into reality and fostering self-reliance. From modest beginnings to achieving financial independence, this initiative has become a beacon of hope for thousands of women.
Pushpa, a Jeevika Didi for more than 15 years, recounted her journey with IANS: "I have been part of the Jeevika canteen for five years. Previously, we lived in a village, struggling with small loans and limited earnings. Now, my work in this canteen has completely transformed our lives. My children are receiving an education, and we are living comfortably.
"This initiative has imparted valuable lessons and provided opportunities to connect with officials and acquire new skills. I am optimistic that with continued government support, we will keep progressing and potentially launch our own business. I received Rs 10,000 from the scheme, which I used to purchase a sewing machine. This will enable me to earn more, and I am thankful for the government’s initiative.”
Sujanti Devi, another Jeevika Didi, expressed similar thoughts: “Working in the kitchen has been incredibly beneficial. Previously, we did manual labor in the village and struggled to educate our children. Now, I have a steady income, manage my household, and my children are excelling in their studies. Thanks to the Rs 10,000 support from the Nitish Kumar government, I bought a pushcart for my husband’s transport work, which has lessened our dependence on loans. I feel independent and free of stress.”
Sanju Devi, who used to work as a craftsperson in Delhi, remarked: “Being part of the Jeevika Didi kitchens in Bihar has utterly transformed my life. I now stay with my children, save on rent, and earn a consistent salary. We also received Rs 10,000, which I used to enhance my husband’s e-rickshaw. Initiatives like these empower women, and we are thankful to the Nitish government.”
Even the patrons of the kitchens express appreciation for this initiative.
Shreekant Kumar, a regular customer, stated: "For Rs 40, I receive a complete, hygienic meal comprising vegetables, rice, lentils, and chutney. The food is clean, delicious, and on par with private restaurants. Programs such as the Jeevika Didi kitchens benefit common citizens and warrant full support. It is encouraging to witness the government's commitment to empowering women while offering nutritious, affordable meals to the community.”
“All the Jeevika Didis radiated joy when they recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to make them Lakhpati Didis. Sharing their happiness with IANS, they expressed their everlasting gratitude to PM Modi and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for their visionary plans aimed at financial empowerment.”
Through Jeevika Didi, Bihar not only guarantees food security but also nurtures women entrepreneurs, paving the path for a new generation of financially independent Lakhpati Didis.
