Bike Rally Launched to Celebrate the Cultural Heritage of Sikkim's Maghey Mela

Gangtok, Jan 3 (NationPress) To celebrate the cultural heritage of Sikkim's Makar Sankranti or Maghey Mela, MLA Madan Cintury from the Zoom-Salghari Assembly constituency officially launched a bike rally at the Jorethang Football Stadium on Friday.

According to officials, this bike rally, initiated by the Makar Sankranti or Maghe Sankranti Mela Committee, is designed to elevate the fair into a prominent cultural event.

The rally saw participation from around 65 bikers from Sikkim and nearby regions, showcasing the local enthusiasm for the occasion.

The bikers set off from Jorethang, traversing culturally rich areas such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Melli, before returning to the starting point.

Traditionally, the Maghey Sankranti Mela has been linked with fairs, communal harmony, and religious practices, but it has now transformed into a grand celebration that merges spirituality with cultural festivities.

"This initiative, led by the Mela Committee, highlights the dedication to preserving and promoting Sikkim's cultural heritage while enhancing tourism and regional unity. The bike rally is anticipated to build excitement for the upcoming Maghey Sankranti Mela 2025, ensuring its legacy for future generations," added an official.

Earlier, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang stressed the importance of taking the Makar Sankranti Maghey Mela to new heights, aiming to boost both the state’s profile and the town of Jorethang.

He urged the community to celebrate the event in traditional ways while integrating modern entertainment to draw a larger crowd.

One significant proposal was to host a full day of rural sports and festivities during the Mela's opening and closing days, featuring traditional activities like high jumping, cycling, pillow fighting, and tug-of-war, along with various other attractions to engage both locals and visitors.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the significance of cultural programs that will take place throughout the day to honor the state’s rich traditions and heritage.

The Maghey Sankranti is observed on January 14.
