New Delhi, Jan 24 (NationPress) With the goal of fostering a robust cyberspace in the region, the member nations of BIMSTEC are set to implement an action plan over the next five years focused on cyber incident response and safeguarding critical information infrastructures, as stated by an official on Friday.

This initiative was decided upon during the Second Meeting of the BIMSTEC Expert Group on Cyber Security Cooperation, which took place here, organized by the National Security Council Secretariat, according to an official announcement.

The proposed action plan will encompass frameworks for sharing cyber-related information, tackling cybercrime, protecting vital information infrastructures, responding to cyber incidents, and addressing international developments related to cyber norms.

Established on June 6, 1997, through the Bangkok Declaration, the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organization.

The Second Meeting of the BIMSTEC Expert Group convened on January 21, continuing the progress and initiatives from the First BIMSTEC Experts Group Meeting on Cyber Security hosted by India in 2022 in New Delhi.

The primary aim of the BIMSTEC Expert Group meeting was to create an Action Plan that enhances coordination and collaboration among member states to fortify cyber security in the utilization of ICTs.

Key exchanges during the second meeting included the BIMSTEC CERT-TO-CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) cooperative mechanism, a Cybercrime Cooperation Framework for law enforcement agencies, and initiatives for capacity building in cyber security across the region.

Throughout the sessions of the second meeting, India shared insights regarding its initiatives on the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) focusing on 'Cyber Hygiene for school children'.

The meeting concluded that executing the action plan will represent a significant advancement towards enhancing cyber security cooperation within BIMSTEC, as per the statement.

It emphasized that through these efforts, BIMSTEC countries can unite to establish a more secure and resilient cyberspace in the region.
