Former Tripura Chief Minister and sitting Lok Sabha member Biplab Kumar Deb has been appointed National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as part of a new team of office-bearers announced by BJP National President Nitin Nabin on Monday, 17 August. Two other leaders from the Northeastern region — Phangnon Konyak of Nagaland and Mriganka Deo Barman of Assam — have been appointed National Secretaries.

Key Appointments from the Northeast

Biplab Kumar Deb, 55, brings a substantial organisational and administrative record to his new national role. He currently represents the West Tripura constituency in the Lok Sabha, having won the seat in the 2024 Parliamentary elections. Prior to that, he served as a Rajya Sabha member representing Tripura from September 2022 to June 2024.

Phangnon Konyak, a Rajya Sabha member from Nagaland, and Mriganka Deo Barman, who currently serves as Vice President of the Assam Olympic Association, round out the Northeast trio elevated in this reshuffle. Deo Barman has previously held multiple organisational positions within the BJP's Assam unit, including General Secretary, and served as State President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Assam Pradesh.

Deb's Political Journey and Historic Tripura Win

Deb served as the 10th Chief Minister of Tripura from 9 March 2018 to 14 May 2022. His tenure is most closely associated with the BJP's landmark victory in Tripura in 2018, which ended the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s 25-year rule in the state — one of the most significant electoral upsets in recent Northeast India political history. He resigned as Chief Minister in May 2022 and was succeeded by incumbent Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha.

Before his stint as Chief Minister, Deb also served as BJP Tripura State President, giving him a deep grounding in grassroots party organisation — a profile that reportedly made him a natural choice for a national secretary-general role.

Senior Leaders Offer Congratulations

The appointments drew warm responses from senior BJP leaders across the region. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha posted: 'Heartiest congratulations to Shri Biplab Kumar Deb Ji on being appointed as the National General Secretary of BJP. Your extensive administrative experience and grassroots leadership will significantly strengthen the party organisation nationwide.'

Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton, who also serves as the BJP Legislature Party leader in Nagaland, wrote on social media regarding Konyak's appointment: 'Wishing her every success as she takes on this new responsibility. May her experience, dedication and commitment contribute greatly to the party and to the service of the people.'

Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia also extended congratulations to the newly appointed national team members from the region.

What This Signals for the BJP's Northeast Strategy

The elevation of three Northeastern leaders to the BJP's national organisational structure is notable. The Northeast — comprising eight states — has been a key focus of the BJP's expansion strategy over the past decade, with the party now in government across several states in the region either directly or through alliances. Placing experienced regional figures in national roles is consistent with the party's broader effort to integrate Northeast leadership into its central decision-making apparatus.

All three newly appointed leaders separately thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, National President Nitin Nabin, and other central BJP leaders for the opportunity. The full contours of Nabin's new national team and their specific portfolios are expected to become clearer in the coming days.
