Tripura BJP chief Abhishek Debroy takes charge, targets 2028 Assembly polls
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Newly appointed Tripura Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Abhishek Debroy formally assumed charge on Friday, 29 May at the party's state headquarters in Agartala, pledging to strengthen the organisation from the booth level upward ahead of the 2028 Tripura Assembly elections. The 44-year-old first-time MLA becomes the 15th State BJP President, appointed by national party chief Nitin Nabin just a day before the formal charge-taking ceremony.
Formal Charge-Taking and Reception
The state unit organised a reception ceremony to welcome Debroy, who represents the Matarbari Assembly constituency in Gomati district of southern Tripura, having won his seat in the 2023 Assembly elections. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, outgoing state party President Rajib Bhattacharjee, central observer Rajdeep Roy, several ministers, and senior state leaders were present at the event.
Debroy's Organisational Priorities
In his address, Debroy outlined a ground-up restructuring drive, stating his intent to fortify the party at every tier — from individual booths to the state command — so the BJP enters the next election cycle in full readiness. He set his sights squarely on delivering 'better results' in the polls scheduled for February–March 2028.
Debroy also issued a pointed warning to party workers against posting critical comments on social media platforms including Facebook, cautioning that such remarks damage the party's public image. 'Central and state leaders are closely monitoring the activities and social media comments of party workers, and stern action will be taken against those who make adverse comments against the party and senior leaders on social media platforms,' he said.
Chief Minister Saha's Endorsement
Chief Minister Saha, who himself served as state BJP President from 15 January 2020 to 25 August 2022, welcomed the appointment of a younger leader, saying it would draw more youth into the party fold. 'Now the state party organisation would be restructured at all levels to further strengthen the BJP ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections,' Saha told reporters. He also posted his congratulations on social media platform X, expressing confidence that under Debroy's 'dynamic leadership and organisational vision, the party will grow stronger.'
Debroy's Political Background
A pharmacy graduate, Debroy entered politics in 2001 through student activism. He held positions in the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) — the student wing of the Indian National Congress (Congress) — and later in the Youth Congress, before crossing over to the BJP in 2017. His appointment ends a prolonged wait; at least a dozen names had been circulating in political circles for the post over several months. Former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and several other senior leaders also congratulated Debroy on the appointment.
What Comes Next
With the 2028 Assembly elections roughly two and a half years away, the BJP's immediate task is organisational consolidation in a state where it has faced periodic internal dissent. How swiftly Debroy can execute the promised booth-level restructuring — and whether his social media discipline drive translates into visible party unity — will be early indicators of his effectiveness as state chief.
