New Delhi, Dec 22 (NationPress) Amidst a heated exchange between the BJP and Congress regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comments on infiltration in Assam and the Northeast, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Monday accused the Congress party of concealing historical truths about the Partition.

Chugh's statements followed Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's critique of Modi's claims that the Congress neglected Assam and the Northeast during its governance and allowed infiltrators to jeopardize the region's security and cultural identity. Kharge emphasized that the BJP, being in power both at the Centre and in Assam, should be accountable for governance shortcomings rather than blaming the Opposition.

Quoting the BJP's slogan of a “double-engine government”, Kharge questioned why Modi was shifting the responsibility to Congress while his party has been ruling for several years.

In response to Kharge’s comments, Chugh informed IANS that Prime Minister Modi simply reiterated the uncomfortable realities surrounding India's Partition, which he asserted the Congress has purposely overlooked for years. “Modi has once again brought to light the stark truths of the 1947 Partition that Congress has attempted to hide. Prior to Independence, the Muslim League and Congress worked together to merge Assam into East Pakistan. This illustrates Congress's political opportunism,” Chugh accused.

He further criticized Congress for placing its political ambitions above the national interest, asserting that it has never prioritized Assam's identity, culture, or integrity, but rather focused on political calculations with support from the British and the Muslim League.

Chugh acknowledged the role of freedom fighters in protecting Assam’s future, praising freedom fighter Gopinath Bordoloi for his bravery in opposing such actions, even within his own party. Thanks to his resistance and the collective determination of the Assamese people, the state remained a vital part of India.

Kharge's statements were made in reaction to Prime Minister Modi's speech at a public rally in Guwahati on Saturday, following the opening of a new terminal at the city's airport.

During his speech, Modi accused the Congress of ignoring Assam and the Northeast for decades and claimed that infiltrators were permitted to settle in the region, endangering its security and cultural identity.

Regarding the recently concluded Maharashtra local body elections, Tarun Chugh asserted that the results indicated increasing public backing for nationalist forces. “Nationalist parties have triumphed, while those who have persistently disrespected Sanatan Dharma have faced defeat,” he noted.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Shiv Sena, and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), achieved a resounding victory in elections for 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, securing 207 municipal president positions and leaving the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) with only 44.

Final results released by the State Election Commission late Sunday revealed that the BJP emerged as the largest party with 117 municipal president posts, followed by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena with 53 and the NCP with 37. This outcome further solidified the Mahayuti alliance’s dominance in Maharashtra's political arena.
