Kolkata, Nov 19 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally approached the Enforcement Directorate (ED), urging a thorough investigation into the purported collaboration between Trinamool Congress (TMC) officials and sand smuggling operations within West Bengal.
BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, representing Asansol (Dakshin), has accused Tarun Chakraborty, a councillor from Ward Number 87 of Asansol Municipal Corporation, of facilitating the illegal extraction of sand from Damra Ghat located on the Damodar River, and profiting significantly from this operation.
Paul, who transitioned from a fashion designer to politics, has also highlighted multiple alleged sand smuggling rings in her correspondence with the ED.
“The illegal sand mining is disrupting the course of the Damodar River. Numerous areas have become perilous, leading to tragic incidents where individuals have lost their lives while bathing,” Paul stated on Tuesday evening.
She elaborated, saying, "The continuous traffic of sand-laden trucks and tractors is damaging the roads in various villages. The environmental pollution is escalating alarmingly. I will promptly seek the ED's intervention in this issue.”
This plea follows the ED's prior arrest of businessman Arun Saraf linked to a sand smuggling case, marking the first arrest of its kind in West Bengal.
Subsequent to this, the ED has conducted raids at multiple locations, including a businessman’s home in Asansol, targeting the illegal sand extraction network.
This time, MLA Agnimitra Paul has directly accused the TMC councillor concerning the sand smuggling matter.
In response to the BJP legislator’s claims, TMC councillor Tarun Chakraborty refuted any connection to the illegal activities.
“We have witnessed sand being extracted from Damra Ghat for years. It is still ongoing. Local impoverished and unemployed individuals, especially youth, transport the sand using bicycles, rickshaws, or tractors. I have no association with this,” the TMC leader stated to reporters on Wednesday, dismissing the allegations as unfounded.
He asserted that he has already contacted various authorities regarding the rampant illegal sand mining occurring at the ghat.
