Bhubaneswar, March 26 (NationPress) The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday criticized the opposition Congress, claiming that directives from its Delhi leadership instructed them to obstruct the Assembly proceedings until March 27 due to their planned rally in front of the state Assembly.

During a press briefing in Bhubaneswar, Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan alleged that both the Congress and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) have been causing disruptions for the past 13 days for their political benefits.

He accused both parties of failing to deliver justice to victims in numerous cases of women's atrocities during their tenure in the state.

In response to the Congress' call for a house committee to address women's atrocity cases, Harichandan clarified, "According to the established rules and procedures, a house committee is convened for investigation only if a significant incident occurs. The committee also visits the site for fact-finding. All Congress leaders are cognizant of this process."

He deemed the demand for a house committee to investigate all recent incidents of crime against women as unreasonable and absurd.

The Law Minister asserted that Congress leaders are aware of the truth, claiming their primary objective is to disrupt Assembly proceedings.

According to Harichandan, statistics show that incidents of crime against women in the state have decreased by approximately 4.2 percent this year compared to last year.

He mentioned that the Opposition has not formally requested the Chief Minister to address this issue. Harichandan noted that the state government spends around Rs 1 crore daily for Assembly operations.

He alleged that the Opposition, by halting House proceedings for their political advantage, is wasting public funds.

Significantly, a scene of high drama unfolded inside and outside the Odisha Assembly when Speaker Surama Padhy suspended 12 of the 14 Congress legislators on Tuesday for their disruptive conduct.

Those Congress MLAs who refused to exit the Assembly were forcibly removed late Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, two additional Congress legislators were suspended by the Speaker for creating a tumultuous atmosphere within the Assembly.

For the past 13 days, the Congress MLAs have been continuously protesting in the Well of the House, using gongs, whistles, and other traditional instruments, demanding the establishment of a house committee to investigate women's atrocities.
