New Delhi, May 16 (NationPress) The BJP criticized the opposition INDIA bloc on Friday, labeling it an opportunistic and unsustainable coalition, in response to senior Congress member P. Chidambaram’s public skepticism regarding its future.
During the launch of the book "Contesting Democratic Deficit" by Salman Khurshid and Mritunjay Singh Yadav, Chidambaram voiced concerns about the current status of the Opposition alliance.
"The future of the INDIA bloc appears dim, as Mritunjay Singh Yadav suggested. He thinks the alliance remains intact, but I have my doubts. Only Salman (Khurshid) can clarify since he was part of the negotiation team. If the alliance is truly intact, I would be pleased, but it seems to be unraveling," he remarked.
In response to Chidambaram’s comments, BJP's Kerala unit President and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar argued that the coalition was formed solely from opportunism and a shared animosity towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"The citizens of India made their choice in 2014, 2019, and will again in 2024. No coalition based on opportunism, corruption, and dynastic politics can endure. The INDIA bloc is merely a gathering of parties bound by their fear and disdain for Modi. That’s not a vision that will gain public support," Chandrasekhar stated to IANS.
He highlighted that the BJP's strength lies in its principles, dedication to national service, and leadership under Prime Minister Modi.
"The BJP is founded on values, not on power-hungry compromises. PM Modi tirelessly works for the nation’s progress and safety. That’s why people rally behind us - not out of fear, but out of faith in our vision," he added.
Chhattisgarh Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal echoed similar views, labeling the INDIA bloc a "greed-driven coalition."
"This is an opportunistic alliance that will not last. In contrast, our NDA coalition has persisted for decades because it is founded on ideology, not self-interest," he asserted.
BJP leader Rohan Gupta remarked: "Now they will likely issue a notice to Chidambaram for making anti-party statements. Yet, he is spot on. The INDIA bloc is indeed divided today. Congress was expected to take on the role of a big brother but has failed to meet that expectation. The bloc is now fragmented due to its foundation being built on opportunistic matters."
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, when asked about Chidambaram’s statements, brushed them off as the Congress leader’s personal opinion.
“It’s his own view,” Stalin commented.
Congress leader Harshwardhan Sapkal also minimized the remark, asserting, “It’s his personal statement.”
The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties formed to contest the BJP-led NDA, has been grappling with internal strife and inconsistent messaging among its members. Chidambaram’s remarks have reignited discussions regarding its cohesion and long-term viability.
While Congress officials attempted to distance themselves from Chidambaram’s statements, the BJP seized the moment to reinforce its critique of the alliance.
