New Delhi, Aug 4 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday executed a fierce critique against Lok Sabha's Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi following the Supreme Court's admonition regarding his statements about the Indian Army. The party claimed that the remarks from the apex court highlight "serious concerns" regarding Gandhi's understanding of "Indianness" and his national duties.
During a press briefing at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia accused Gandhi of consistently undermining the Constitution and demoralizing the Indian Armed Forces.
"The Constitution that Rahul Gandhi carries with him everywhere—if anyone is challenging it, it is Rahul Gandhi," Bhatia stated, emphasizing, "It would not be incorrect to assert that if someone is eroding the confidence of our courageous armed forces, it is Rahul Gandhi."
The biting response followed a Supreme Court bench, including Justices Dipankar Datta and Joymalya Bagchi, reprimanding the Congress leader for his assertion that over 2,000 square kilometers of Indian territory had been seized by China.
"If you were a genuine Indian, you would not express such claims," the bench remarked, although it also halted defamation actions against Gandhi concerning the statement.
Gandhi made this claim during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, alleging that "Chinese troops are assaulting Indian Army soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh," in reference to the December 9, 2022, confrontation in Tawang.
Bhatia described these remarks as "factually flawed".
"We are all aware that our forces, exhibiting remarkable valor, confronted the Chinese troops in Galwan. Yet, Rahul Gandhi claimed that China has taken control of 2,000 square kilometers of Indian land. He also stated that the Indian Army is being attacked by Chinese soldiers," he asserted.
Aligning with the Supreme Court's concerns, Bhatia questioned, "How does Rahul Gandhi know that 2,000 sq km of Indian territory has been seized by China? Was he present? Does he have any reliable evidence to substantiate this?"
"The apex court's serious remarks about Rahul Gandhi's Indianness concern every citizen of the nation," he stated.
Bhatia criticized Gandhi for choosing to express such sensitive comments on social media instead of addressing them in Parliament—a point noted by the apex court as well.
"You were previously an MP and are now the Leader of Opposition. Why not raise these issues in Parliament instead of spreading falsehoods on social media?" he questioned.
The BJP spokesperson also recounted earlier instances where Gandhi faced judicial backlash. He referenced the Supreme Court's condemnation of Gandhi's statements during the Rafale deal controversy, where the Congress leader misattributed remarks to the apex court.
"Back then, the court deemed his statements unfortunate and demanded an unconditional apology," Bhatia recalled.
Bhatia also mentioned a previous defamation case involving freedom fighter Veer Savarkar, where the court reminded Gandhi of a letter his grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, wrote in praise of Savarkar, advising him to avoid making "irresponsible comments" about freedom fighters.
Labeling Gandhi's repeated comments as part of a "distorted anti-India mentality," Bhatia asserted that such rhetoric raises doubts about his credibility and maturity to occupy a constitutional role like the Leader of Opposition.
