Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president B.Y. Vijayendra on 27 July demanded a comprehensive investigation into alleged irregularities in the recruitment of 400 veterinary officers through the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC), warning that those found culpable must face stringent punishment. The demand came amid mounting protests by job aspirants in Bengaluru and the emergence of an alleged audio clip that has shaken confidence in the state's premier recruitment body.

The Audio Leak and What It Alleges

At the centre of the controversy is an alleged audio clip purportedly linked to the KPSC recruitment process. According to allegations, the clip suggests that candidates could secure higher marks in exchange for money — a claim Vijayendra described as an 'extremely serious development.' He said the leak had 'undermined the credibility of the recruitment process' and that brokers were reportedly speaking openly about the alleged arrangement, which he called deeply troubling.

Delayed FIR Raises Questions

Vijayendra alleged that despite attempts to file a complaint in the morning, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered only around 3 pm. 'The case was registered only after obtaining the government's approval, which raises several questions,' he said. The BJP leader contended that the delay pointed to the ruling Congress government's reluctance to act swiftly on the matter.

BJP's Stance and Self-Criticism

Vijayendra pledged the BJP's full support to affected candidates and students who have planned protests on Monday and Tuesday. Notably, he also acknowledged his own party's delayed response. 'I openly admit that we, too, made mistakes. When young people take to the streets in protest, we should have treated the issue with greater seriousness,' he said, adding that he spent nearly half an hour interacting with students and would give the issue greater attention going forward.

Responding to allegations that the KPSC Chairman was appointed during the BJP's own tenure in government, Vijayendra stated that the party would not shield wrongdoing regardless of which administration made the appointment. 'Regardless of which government's tenure the appointment took place in, we will not support irregularities. If a scam has occurred, there must be a comprehensive investigation,' he said.

Congress Government Under Fire

The BJP leader accused the Congress government of inaction, alleging it had failed to initiate reforms and that its silence had eroded public trust in the KPSC. 'The government should have initiated reforms in this case. Instead, it has remained inactive, resulting in a decline in the credibility of the KPSC,' Vijayendra said. Several job aspirants had reportedly met him to share their grievances, and he assured them of the party's backing in seeking justice.

Student protests are scheduled to continue into the coming week, with the BJP having committed to stand alongside demonstrators.
