BJP Raises Alarm Over Unlawful Contractual Appointments in Bengal Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 11 (NationPress) On Saturday, the BJP addressed a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, highlighting the unlawful recruitment of temporary personnel as sector officers and assistants in the Kasba Assembly constituency of Kolkata.
The correspondence stated: “It has come to our attention that a directive issued by Returning Officer Purnima Dey, WBCS (Exe.), has led to the employment of contractual staff as ‘Sector Assistants’ and ‘Assistant Sector Officers.’ This move seems to be a calculated effort to bypass established protocols, raising significant concerns regarding the electoral process's integrity. The individuals mentioned in this directive are believed to be contractual employees of the ISGPP Cell under the Panchayat and Rural Development Department, currently associated with the South 24 Parganas Zilla Parishad.”
The BJP emphasized that the Election Commission’s guidelines explicitly prohibit the deployment of temporary staff in critical election roles such as sector-level supervision, due to the lack of institutional accountability and protections that permanent government workers enjoy.
“Moreover, the titles ‘Sector Assistant’ and ‘Assistant Sector Officer’ do not conform to the recognized hierarchy acknowledged by the Election Commission of India. This raises significant concerns that these titles may have been intentionally manufactured to evade scrutiny. It is also notable that these individuals were previously referred to as ‘Sector Officers’ in past communications, and their titles were altered without any meaningful changes to their roles or duties after objections were raised,” the BJP stated.
According to the BJP, such actions represent a grave violation of the Model Code of Conduct and threaten the fairness of the electoral process.
The party has requested that the Election Commission immediately suspend the enforcement of this directive.
“We demand strict action against the Returning Officer of 149-Kasba Assembly Constituency for evident professional misconduct and bias. It is crucial that only qualified and permanent government officials are assigned to all election-related responsibilities in full adherence to ECI guidelines,” the BJP urged.
