Bhubaneswar, July 17 (NationPress) BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi on Thursday expressed her discontent towards the opposition for initiating a statewide bandh in Odisha, labeling it as an effort to stir up political unrest rather than offer productive solutions in light of the recent self-immolation incident.
In a media briefing, BJP's national spokesperson Sarangi remarked, "The tragic passing of a young student from FM (Autonomous) College on July 14 has left us all in mourning. The government has acted swiftly and responsibly within its constitutional and administrative duties. Yet, instead of fostering tranquility or proposing positive measures, the Congress and its allies are resorting to disruptive politics."
The MP from Bhubaneswar emphasized that the Odisha government efficiently addressed the situation.
She pointed out that the government assumed full responsibility for the treatment of the young girl.
Sarangi mentioned that prompt disciplinary and legal steps were taken against the accused faculty member, Samir Kumar Sahu, and the College Principal, Dillip Kumar Ghose, who were subsequently arrested.
Furthermore, she denounced the calls for the resignation of Odisha's Higher Education Minister, describing it as a diversionary strategy.
"Such actions are intolerable. This is not a moment for street politics but for serious self-reflection among these parties," Sarangi asserted.
Criticizing the Congress, she stated, "The Congress governed for 40 years, and the BJD has been in power for 24 years. What measures did they take to establish a secure environment for women? Why did they fail to ensure women's safety back then?"
Sarangi further noted that the opposition BJD and Congress lack the moral high ground to question the newly-formed government under Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who has been in office for just over a year.
She accused the opposition of exploiting the tragedy for political gain, stating, "Both BJD and Congress are contaminating the political atmosphere by using this incident for their advantage. They have failed to create a safe environment during their governance. It’s time for them to reflect on their actions."
Sarangi concluded by expressing her trust in the BJP-led administration's ability to deliver justice and enhance women's safety statewide.
Chief Minister Majhi visited the victim's family at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, on two occasions to offer support from the state.
Sarangi also mentioned that, for the first time, even President Droupadi Murmu met with the victim's family, a precedent not seen previously.
In contrast to the prior government, Sarangi asked, "During the 24-year tenure of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, numerous such incidents took place, yet he never reached out to the victims or their families. The difference is evident."
She also referenced a recent FIR lodged by the deceased girl's brother at Bhograi Police Station, alleging threats to their safety from BJD and Congress supporters.
