New Delhi, Feb 8 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is currently leading in 48 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is lagging behind with 22 seats, as two prominent leaders of the AAP -- Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia -- are trailing in their respective constituencies. Sisodia acknowledged his defeat and extended congratulations to the victorious BJP candidate.
In the Jangpura Assembly seat, Manish Sisodia is falling behind as Tarvinder Singh Marwah of the BJP is leading by over 500 votes, with just one round of counting left. Sisodia transitioned to Jangpura, abandoning his previous stronghold of Patparganj.
While addressing the media, Sisodia admitted his defeat in the Jangpura Assembly seat. He expressed his hope that the BJP's Tarvinder Singh Marwah, poised to win in Jangpura, will attend to the community's needs.
When questioned about the reasons behind his loss, he stated that he would review the results and draw conclusions.
"The party workers performed admirably. We all put in great effort. The public supported us as well. Nevertheless, I lost by 600 votes. I congratulate the winning candidate. I trust he will serve the constituency," Sisodia remarked.
In a conversation with IANS, Marwah expressed gratitude, saying, "I appreciate all the workers who toiled for the BJP. My thanks also go to the residents of Delhi and the Jangpura public for casting their votes for the BJP. They have assisted in the BJP's success here and defeated Manish Sisodia."
Sisodia had been credited with reforming Delhi's government schools during the AAP's first term. However, the second term proved challenging for him as he was arrested in February 2023 due to allegations of corruption linked to Delhi's now-defunct liquor policy.
Shortly thereafter, he resigned as Deputy Chief Minister and relinquished his other responsibilities. Following nearly 18 months in custody, the Supreme Court granted him bail.
Meanwhile, the New Delhi Assembly is currently experiencing a fluctuating competition between Kejriwal and BJP's Parvesh Verma.
Verma is reportedly leading by 3000 votes after 11 rounds of voting, with two rounds still pending.
In an interview with IANS, Verma stated, "I am pleased that the citizens of Delhi have entrusted us with their votes. This victory belongs to the people of Delhi."
He declined to comment on the possibility of running for the next Delhi Chief Minister position.
Arvind Kejriwal has held the New Delhi seat since 2013 when he triumphed over then-Congress Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, paving the way for the AAP's decade-long governance of Delhi.
Kejriwal has yet to respond to the ongoing trends.
As counting day concludes, the AAP seems to have missed another victory in Delhi. Attempting to secure a third consecutive term, the AAP is currently trailing with 22 seats, while updated trends indicate that the BJP is leading in 48 out of 70 Assembly seats in Delhi.
