BJP Member of Parliament Dhullu Mahto and CPI(ML)-backed Jharkhand MLA Arup Chatterjee staged near-simultaneous rival demonstrations in Dhanbad's Nirsa on Wednesday, 15 July over a proposed ₹400 crore elevated road project, turning a Centre-approved infrastructure initiative into the latest flashpoint in their intensifying political feud. Both events concluded peacefully under heavy security deployment, with no reports of violence or clashes.

Rival Shows of Strength

Mahto addressed a gathering of BJP workers and labour organisation members near the proposed project site, accusing MLA Chatterjee of obstructing the Centre-approved project for personal interests. He asserted that development work would not be allowed to stall under any circumstances and warned that those attempting to create hurdles would be countered through democratic means.

Simultaneously, Chatterjee led a protest march under the banner of CPI(ML) and the Bihar Colliery Kamgar Union, insisting his opposition was not directed against development itself. He alleged that the project was being used as a vehicle for illegal financial gains, land-grabbing, and expansion of political influence in the region.

Security on High Alert

Superintendent of Police (Rural) S. Mohammad Yakub personally monitored the situation from Nirsa throughout the day. Additional police personnel, riot-control units, Vajra vehicles, and other security resources were deployed across sensitive areas. Preventive action had also been initiated against several individuals in anticipation of possible unrest, according to officials.

Escalating Tensions Behind the Rallies

The rival demonstrations did not emerge in a vacuum. In the days preceding Wednesday's events, Chatterjee claimed he had received threats invoking the name of a gangster and raised questions over the MP's alleged role in the matter — allegations Mahto has flatly denied. Mahto, in turn, accused the MLA of shielding criminals and has served a ₹2 crore defamation notice on Chatterjee. The exchange marks a sharp escalation in what has been a long-running political rivalry between the two leaders in the Dhanbad region.

What the Project Dispute Reveals

The ₹400 crore elevated road project, reportedly approved by the Centre, was intended as a development measure for the Dhanbad constituency. Its conversion into a political battleground reflects the broader contest for influence in Jharkhand's mining belt, where infrastructure projects frequently intersect with questions of land rights, labour politics, and local power dynamics. This is not the first time a major infrastructure project in the region has become a proxy for political rivalry between ruling and opposition-aligned forces.

With a defamation case now filed and both sides digging in, the dispute over the elevated road project shows little sign of resolution in the near term.
