Hyderabad, April 4 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially announced N. Gautham Rao as its candidate for the upcoming biennial election for the Hyderabad Local Authorities Constituency (LAC) seat in the Telangana Legislative Council.
The BJP's Central Election Committee confirmed Gautham Rao's candidacy for the election set to take place on April 23.
Previously, Gautham Rao held the position of president for BJP's Hyderabad Central district.
In March, the Election Commission of India revealed the schedule for the MLC election, issuing a notification on March 28.
The deadline for submitting nomination papers is April 4.
Nomination papers will undergo scrutiny on April 7, and April 9 is the final date for the withdrawal of papers. Voting is scheduled for April 23, with counting set for April 25.
The current MLC, M. S. Prabhakar, will see his term conclude on May 1 of this year.
Prabhakar was elected on a BRS ticket during the last election but changed parties to Congress in July of the previous year.
The ruling Congress is expected to support the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) candidate for the MLC elections. The AIMIM, led by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, has yet to announce its candidate.
The electorate for the Hyderabad LAC comprises 110 voters, including corporators, MLAs, and MPs. The AIMIM holds the majority with 49 votes, followed by the BRS with 25 and Congress with 14. The remaining voters are affiliated with the BJP.
It remains uncertain whether the main opposition party, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), will field a candidate.
Previously, the BRS chose not to participate in the recent MLC elections for the Graduate and Teachers' constituencies, during which the BJP won two out of three seats.
Last month, five MLC vacancies from the MLA quota were filled without opposition, with three candidates from Congress and one each from its ally, the Communist Party of India (CPI), and the BRS being elected unopposed.
