Kolkata, March 31 (NationPress) The President of the West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samik Bhattacharya, along with the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the State Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, formally approached the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday, urging the body to intervene and halt the location tracking of their mobile phones by certain senior police officials in the state.

On Tuesday afternoon, both leaders visited the office of the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and lodged a written complaint identifying several high-ranking police officers as the orchestrators behind the tracking of their mobile devices.

In statements made to the media, Adhikari and Bhattacharya disclosed the names of the police officials they allege are involved in the cell phone tracking process.

"The Director General of the state's Intelligence Branch, Vineet Kumar Goyal, and the Director General of the State Special Task Force, Javed Shamim, are implicated in the phone tracking scheme. We possess concrete evidence to support our claims," stated the Leader of the Opposition.

Additionally, he informed the ECI about other police personnel, including Manoj Kumar Verma, the state's Director of Securities; Mehedi Hasan, Superintendent of Jangipur Police District; and Palash Dhali, District Police Superintendent of West Midnapore, asserting that they are neglecting to implement the ECI's directives properly, despite the ongoing model code of conduct during the crucial two-phase Assembly elections scheduled for next month.

In response, the State Trinamool Congress Vice-President, Jai Prakash Majumdar, dismissed the allegations made by the two BJP leaders, characterizing them as a manifestation of the BJP's frustration stemming from their anticipated loss in the upcoming state Assembly elections.

Majumdar remarked, "The BJP is overwhelmed with fear of defeat, leading them to fabricate such unfounded allegations. This rhetoric is merely a reflection of their anxiety, as they are the ones engaging in the conduct they accuse others of, including the use of Pegasus by Union Home Minister Amit Shah."

Point of View

The allegations brought forth by BJP leaders against police officials raise significant concerns regarding electoral integrity and the potential misuse of authority. As the elections loom, maintaining a level playing field is paramount for democracy. The reactions from opposing parties suggest a contentious political atmosphere ahead.
