Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 29 (NationPress) The President of West Bengal's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rajya Sabha MP, Samik Bhattacharya, made serious allegations on Sunday regarding the systematic suppression of democratic rights in West Bengal by the ruling Trinamool Congress.
During a press briefing at the BJP's state headquarters located at 6 Muralidhar Sen Lane in Kolkata, Bhattacharya emphasized that the right to dissent is fundamental to any democracy. He lamented that the Opposition has been denied this essential constitutional right within the state.
He pointed out that the Leader of Opposition (LoP), Suvendu Adhikari, has had to approach the courts over 104 times seeking authorization for conducting political rallies and public gatherings.
Adhikari was also suspended from the West Bengal Assembly for a period of 11 months, an act that Bhattacharya asserts illustrates the dire situation faced by political party members and ordinary citizens alike in the region.
The BJP leaders recalled a grave incident involving Suvendu Adhikari following his win in the Nandigram constituency during the 2021 state elections, where miscreants allegedly attempted to ignite his vehicle by dousing it in petrol.
According to Bhattacharya, the Trinamool Congress is struggling to present a formidable candidate against Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram.
At the press conference, Suvendu Adhikari officially received the election symbol of the BJP to contest from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency.
He has expressed his intent to compete directly against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her home Assembly seat.
After obtaining the BJP poll symbol, Adhikari plans to pay respects to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee before heading to Bhabanipur.
Suvendu Adhikari announced that he will submit his nomination papers for the Nandigram Assembly seat on March 30 at noon in Haldia.
Notable figures expected to attend the event include Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, former State BJP President Dilip Ghosh, Uttar Pradesh Minister JPS Rathore, along with BJP candidates from Haldia and Mahishadal.
Samik Bhattacharya underscored the historical significance of the BJP office at 6 Muralidhar Sen Lane, referring to it as the soul and lifeblood of the BJP in West Bengal, where many prominent leaders like Haripada Bharati and Tapan Sikdar have previously operated.
While most routine party activities are now handled from the Salt Lake office, this historic headquarters still holds tremendous emotional significance for BJP workers.
