Suvendu Adhikari Warns of Financial Crisis in West Bengal at Sandeshkhali

Kolkata, Jan 1 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, addressed a public gathering at Sandeshkhali in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Tuesday, defying a last-minute police denial of permission for the event.

Adhikari's rally is perceived as a response to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s similar gathering at the same location on Monday, marking her first public appearance since local protests, particularly by women, erupted earlier this year against sexual harassment and illegal land acquisition by the now-suspended Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates.

During his speech, Adhikari compared Mamata Banerjee to Muhammad Yunus, the head of the caretaker government in neighboring Bangladesh.

“On one side, there is Muhammad Yunus and on the other, Mamata Banerjee,” he stated. He emphasized the necessity for the unity of Hindu voters against the Trinamool Congress and in favor of the BJP in the pivotal state Assembly elections scheduled for 2026.

He provided examples of how the solidarity among Hindu voters resulted in the BJP's success in the recent Lok Sabha elections from Tamluk and Kanthi, two constituencies in his home district of East Midnapore.

Furthermore, the BJP leader raised alarms about the financial instability West Bengal is reportedly facing due to alleged financial mismanagement by the current Trinamool Congress-led government.

“Last financial year, the per capita debt in West Bengal stood at Rs 20,000, which has surged to over Rs 55,000 now. The way the Chief Minister spoke here on Monday made it appear as if she were addressing the opposition rather than acting as the Chief Minister,” Adhikari remarked.

In her address on Monday at Sandeshkhali, the Chief Minister hinted at a “money game” influencing that movement.

“There was a money game at Sandeshkhali. The people were misled. However, lies do not last for long. Thus, I urge all of you to stay united and not fall into the traps of deceitful individuals. I encourage women to go anywhere if summoned by anyone,” the Chief Minister stated on Monday at Sandeshkhali.
