Kolkata, March 25 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, has approached a single judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, requesting authorization to hold a rally in Baruipur-Paschim, the assembly constituency represented by Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay.

In his petition submitted to Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, the LoP accused the local police of refusing him permission to organize the rally scheduled for March 27.

The petition has been accepted, and a hearing is set for Wednesday.

Previously, on March 19, Adhikari attempted to host a protest rally in the Baruipur-Paschim assembly area. However, this rally by the BJP coincided with an event organized by the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Numerous altercations erupted, leading to exchanges of slogans between the Trinamool Congress and BJP legislators regarding the two opposing events. Due to the ensuing violence, the LoP was compelled to withdraw and cancel his planned protest.

The purpose of Suvendu Adhikari's protest in the Baruipur-Paschim constituency was to highlight the alleged bias faced by BJP legislators within the assembly during the ongoing session. The LoP accused the Speaker of maintaining a biased stance by suspending opposition members, including himself, from attending the assembly proceedings.

After being denied police permission for a rally on March 27, the LoP sought recourse through the Calcutta High Court.

It is noteworthy that Adhikari and three other BJP legislators were suspended from attending assembly sessions during the budget discussions. The budget session has been tumultuous, marked by protests from BJP legislators on this matter during both the initial phase in February and the subsequent phase in March.

In recent times, there have been multiple instances where the police denied the LoP permission to hold protest rallies in various regions of the state. On each occasion, he has turned to the Calcutta High Court, which has consistently granted him permission.
