Kolkata, July 17 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court has granted permission for the BJP's state unit in West Bengal to hold a rally in Siliguri city, located in the Darjeeling district, on July 21. This rally aims to protest against the escalating incidences of crime against women across various regions of the state.
Coincidentally, the Trinamool Congress is set to hold its annual Martyrs’ Day rally in Kolkata on the same date.
Initially, the Siliguri Police Commissioner had denied permission for the BJP rally, which is set to be led by Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly. Following this, the BJP approached Justice Tirthankar Ghosh from the single-judge bench to contest the police's decision.
On Thursday, the court ultimately permitted the rally but established several conditions. The primary stipulation is that the gathering must not exceed 10,000 attendees.
Additionally, the court directed that the procession should be conducted in a manner that allows for unobstructed traffic flow. The rally is permitted to occur between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m..
Justice Ghosh instructed the rally organizers to ensure that their political activities do not disrupt the public or create any potential law and order issues.
BJP leaders condemned the habitual denial of rally permissions by the police for opposition parties, claiming that they are often forced to seek judicial approval. They criticized the police's actions as a sign of weakness among their leadership.
Conversely, a leader from the Trinamool Congress asserted that their party maintains no influence over police or administrative decisions.
