Agartala, July 17 (NationPress) Tripura's Chief Minister Manik Saha asserted on Thursday that numerous influential individuals within society are engaged in the drug trade for financial gain. However, he cautioned that no one will evade justice if apprehended. While inaugurating an awareness initiative under the ‘Drug-Free India Campaign’ aimed at addressing child marriage at the Gandhigram Higher Secondary School grounds in West Tripura District, CM Saha emphasized that those involved in the drug trade will face severe consequences.
“Moreover, it is imperative for all community members to increase their awareness to combat child marriage. The government is contemplating the registration of marriages prior to their occurrence to avert such practices,” stated CM Saha, who also oversees the Home portfolio.
“I have instructed various agencies, including the police, that individuals involved in the drug trade should face no leniency whatsoever. Those engaged in drug peddling are harming themselves, their communities, and the state. Many influential figures who roam freely in various locales are also implicated in this activity. However, once they are ensnared by the law, no one can come to their rescue,” he added.
He remarked that the state did not experience such levels of addiction in the past. For the last 40 years, addiction has cast a shadow over the state, which we are enduring today. Following the establishment of the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government in Tripura, a zero-tolerance policy against drugs has been implemented, Saha noted.
He highlighted that Union Home Minister Amit Shah has accorded significant importance to this issue and is consistently reviewing measures against drug trafficking, adding that the state government is also focused on drug prevention as per the central directives.
“Various agencies, including the Tripura Police, are relentlessly conducting operations against drugs. A substantial quantity of drugs has been confiscated, and the amount seized has increased dramatically. Numerous individuals linked to drugs have been apprehended under the NDPS Act and are facing penalties,” the Chief Minister conveyed.
Saha, who also manages the Health and Family Welfare portfolio, called for heightened awareness in the state concerning thalassemia, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS. He stated that child marriage remains a pressing issue and urged everyone to take action to prevent it and to promote awareness against it.
