Agartala, June 29 (NationPress) Acting on the counsel of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the government of Tripura has initiated a zero-tolerance policy towards the drug menace and its illicit trade, stated Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday.
While inaugurating and laying foundation stones for various projects valued at Rs 42.46 crore in the Dhalai district, the Chief Minister emphasized that Tripura has become a route for illegal drug trafficking, and law enforcement agencies remain vigilant to combat these unlawful activities.
“Recently, we have seen a troubling trend of young girls getting involved in drug abuse. The use of drugs through intravenous injection has been rising in Tripura, leading to an increase in HIV/AIDS cases,” remarked Saha, who also oversees the Health, Family Welfare, and Education departments.
He noted that the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has allocated Rs 198 crore for establishing a specialized drug de-addiction center in Bishramganj, located in the Sepahijala district.
The Chief Minister further mentioned that plans are underway to establish drug de-addiction centers across all eight districts of Tripura, with an investment of Rs 20 crore allocated for each center.
In the financial year 2024-2025, drug seizures soared by 103 percent, while the destruction of confiscated drugs increased by 132 percent, he added.
Envisioning a militancy-free state, the Chief Minister reported that following a tripartite agreement in Delhi, under the presence of the Union Home Minister, numerous militants from the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) surrendered to the state government in September of the previous year.
He pledged that all commitments made to the NLFT and ATTF members would be honored. Saha asserted that since the BJP government took charge in Tripura in 2018, all social indicators in the state have shown improvement.
“Tripura ranks second in the northeastern region for GDP, following Assam, and also holds the second position in the region for per capita income, just behind Sikkim. The state's rich natural resources and stunning environmental beauty are invaluable assets, and the government is committed to leveraging them effectively,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Furthermore, he stated that empowering women and ensuring the comprehensive development of tribal communities are top priorities for the government, alongside significant advancements in the education and health sectors.
CM Saha, who also manages the Home department, claimed that Tripura stands as the third-best state in India for maintaining law and order.
“Compared to 2023, the crime rate decreased by 19.4 percent in 2024. To combat cybercrimes in Tripura, a state-level Cyber Crime Police Station was inaugurated on Saturday at Arundhutinagar, located on the outskirts of Agartala,” the Chief Minister concluded.
