Kolkata, Nov 26 (NationPress) The BJP's West Bengal chapter has taken a significant step by petitioning the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court to secure permission for a rally in Changrabandha, a census town situated near the Indo-Bangladesh border in the Cooch Behar district of northern West Bengal.
This legal action follows the denial of permission for the rally by the local police in Cooch Behar.
The rally, titled "Paribartan Sankalp Yatra", is set to be spearheaded by the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.
The BJP's writ petition has been accepted and is anticipated to be heard either on Thursday or Friday, with the rally scheduled for November 29.
BJP leaders in Cooch Behar assert that they submitted a formal request to the Mekhliganj police station well ahead of time. According to local BJP leader Dodhiram Roy, "They neither granted us permission nor provided a receipt acknowledging our application."
Roy further accused the police of intentionally denying permission due to the political significance of the rally, claiming that such permission is frequently withheld for events led by the Leader of the Opposition.
"We usually find ourselves compelled to seek the Calcutta High Court's intervention to obtain rally permissions, and we expect the same outcome for the 'Paribartan Sankalp Yatra' on November 29," Roy concluded.
