Kolkata, March 8 (NationPress) Amid ongoing tensions in West Bengal's Jadavpur University (JU) due to disturbances on March 1, a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court has prohibited any political rallies in the vicinity of the university campus until March 13 without prior court approval.

However, the bench, presided over by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, has granted conditional approval for a previously scheduled rally by a BJP-affiliated student organization on Sunday, which will be led by the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.

According to the court's ruling, no more than 750 individuals may participate in the rally, and the endpoint must be located 100 years away from the boundary wall of Jadavpur University.

In commenting on the restrictions for Sunday’s rally, Justice Ghosh remarked that it does not represent a genuine students' initiative and emphasized the need to consider security for the LoP.

The court has also mandated that the police ensure no political group receives permission for rallies during the stipulated timeframe.

The disturbances at Jadavpur University occurred when State Education Minister Bratya Basu's vehicle was reportedly obstructed upon entering the campus, leading to a scuffle.

Students were advocating for immediate elections for the university’s student council.

The protesting students accused that while Basu attempted to leave amidst the protests, his vehicle struck two students, causing serious injuries that required hospitalization.

During the protests, the Minister sustained minor injuries and fell ill. He was taken to S.S.K.M. Medical College and Hospital but was discharged shortly after.
