Kolkata, July 1 (NationPress) A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, on Tuesday, granted permission to the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, to organize a protest march in Kolkata on Wednesday against the rape of a law student that occurred within her college premises in Kasba last week.
Initially denied police permission for the rally, LoP Adhikari sought the intervention of the Calcutta High Court's single-judge bench presided over by Justice Tirthankar Ghosh.
The case was reviewed on Tuesday, and the single-judge bench granted approval for the rally, albeit with modifications to its route.
Adhikari's plan was to commence the rally near the residence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and conclude at the Kasba police station.
However, Justice Ghosh raised concerns regarding the necessity of continuing the rally to the Kasba police station, given that the three alleged perpetrators have already been apprehended.
Instead, the court directed that the rally proceed to the South Calcutta Law College (New Campus), the site of the incident on the evening of June 25.
The gathering is set to begin at 1 p.m. near the Rash Behari Avenue crossing at Kalighat, before moving towards the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata.
The Kolkata Police's investigation into the alleged rape of the law student has yielded circumstantial evidence that aligns with the victim's statement provided immediately after the event on June 25, thereby supporting the rape allegations against the three suspects.
Monojit Mishra, a former student of the college, has been named as the principal suspect in this grievous crime. The other two accused, Jaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, are identified as facilitators in the offense.
