Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 29 (NationPress) A single-judge Bench of the Calcutta High Court has granted conditional permission to the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, to organize a protest march this Friday near the location of the destroyed warehouses in Anandapur, situated on the southern outskirts of Kolkata, where numerous individuals have tragically lost their lives and many remain unaccounted for.
Earlier that day, LoP Suvendu Adhikari sought the approval of the single-judge Bench presided over by Justice Suvra Ghosh, as the local police had denied him permission for the protest and enacted prohibitory orders within a 100-meter radius of the charred warehouses.
After hearing the case on Thursday afternoon, the single-judge Bench provided conditional consent for the protest march.
The court instructed the LoP to take an alternate route for the protest and mandated that the number of participants should not exceed 2,000.
The march must conclude 200 meters away from the nearby Narendrapur Police Station, and a five-member delegation is permitted to enter the police station to submit a formal request in this regard, as per the court's directives.
On the same afternoon, a group of BJP legislators approached the area of the burned warehouses but remained outside the 100-meter limit, adhering to the prohibitory order in place.
“Mamata Banerjee has failed as a Chief Minister in addressing this tragedy. She has not visited the site even once. I am here to stand in solidarity with the people, but I will maintain my distance out of respect for the law,” stated the LoP.
In remarks to the media during the event, he also accused the authorities of underreporting the death toll.
“I have credible information suggesting that at least 40 individuals have perished due to the fire. The remains are reportedly being discreetly wrapped in fruit packets and removed from the location,” the LoP claimed.
