Kolkata, April 1 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has approached a single judge bench of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, requesting permission to visit Mothabari in the Malda district, which has recently experienced communal unrest.

A segment of the Hindu community in the locality was reportedly attacked by individuals from another community.

In his petition, Adhikari expressed his desire to travel to Mothabari accompanied by one fellow party legislator and one personal bodyguard. The petition has been accepted by the single judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh and is anticipated to be heard during the current week.

Previously, on Sunday, the BJP state president in West Bengal and Union Minister of State, Sukanta Majumdar, attempted to reach Mothabari, but was halted at a considerable distance from the conflict zones.

The LoP is now concerned that he may encounter similar police barriers unless the court issues a specific directive regarding the matter, prompting him to seek intervention from Justice Ghosh on Thursday.

In his petition, Adhikari insisted that his intention was solely to visit the site and meet with the affected families, without engaging in any activities such as rallies that could exacerbate tensions.

As per the latest statistics released by the state police, a total of 61 individuals have been detained in connection with the unrest in Mothabari, and 61 cases have been registered. Although the state police asserted that the situation in Mothabari is currently under control, the LoP has disputed these claims.

According to him, if the situation were truly under control, the state police would not obstruct opposition leaders and media personnel from accessing the troubled area.

Adhikari has also written to Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, urging him to instruct the state government to deploy Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Mothabari.

The district magistrate and police superintendent of Malda are scheduled to present a comprehensive report on how the communal tensions escalated in Mothabari to the Calcutta High Court on April 3.
