Suvendu Adhikari Appeals to Calcutta HC for Security Due to Protest Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 25 (NationPress): The Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal's Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has taken action by approaching the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, voicing significant concerns about his personal safety and claiming insufficient vigilance and protection from the state's police authorities.
His lawyer presented the case to a division bench composed of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen, highlighting the alleged negligence of the state police in providing adequate security for Adhikari despite existing threats and recent occurrences.
Following this, the lawyer officially submitted a petition to the division bench, requesting suitable directives from the High Court concerning security measures and protection for Suvendu Adhikari.
This action came just a day after he was confronted with protests outside the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office in Kolkata, where a group of booth-level officers (BLOs), reportedly supported by the Trinamool Congress, held demonstrations against him.
During the protest, shoes were allegedly thrown at Adhikari, while police personnel were present but seemingly ineffective in managing the situation or preventing the incident from escalating, as per his counsel.
The petition also alleges that the police did not act promptly when the Leader of the Opposition faced protests and ridicule in front of the CEO's office.
The division bench allowed the petition to be filed and agreed to review the matter, which is anticipated to be heard later this week.
Tensions flared on Tuesday outside the CEO's office in central Kolkata as protesting booth-level officers congregated during Adhikari's visit to submit a deputation.
In the aftermath of the incident, Adhikari issued strong statements condemning the actions of the protesting BLOs and expressed dissatisfaction with the behavior of those involved in the demonstration.
It is worth noting that a public interest litigation (PIL) regarding the security of the Leader of the Opposition is already pending before the Chief Justice's bench of the Calcutta High Court.
This PIL seeks orders to ensure that political associates and supporters maintain a safe distance from the Leader of the Opposition during public events or official functions to mitigate security risks.
Alongside the ongoing PIL, Adhikari's new petition raises particular concerns regarding the recent protest and alleged security lapses.
Previously, Adhikari had also approached the Calcutta High Court after his convoy was reportedly attacked by miscreants in Chandrakona, located in the West Midnapore district.
In that instance, Adhikari informed the Court that instead of addressing the attackers, the police had lodged a case against him.
Consequently, Justice Suvra Ghosh issued an interim order preventing the authorities from taking any coercive measures against the Leader of the Opposition related to that case.
