Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 13 (NationPress) The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, submitted a petition to a single-judge Bench of the Calcutta High Court on Monday, requesting a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged assault on his convoy in Chandrakona, located in West Midnapore district, on the night of January 10. The petition has been accepted by the single-judge Bench presided over by Justice Suvra Ghosh, although the date for the initial hearing has yet to be determined.
The incident has garnered significant attention, with the Union Home Ministry demanding a comprehensive report from the LoP's office regarding the attack.
Adhikari's team has already submitted five videos concerning the convoy attack that took place on the night of January 10.
Even Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally contacted Adhikari to inquire about the incident.
During a 15-minute phone discussion with HM Shah, Adhikari detailed the events that transpired in Chandrakona.
His convoy was attacked in Chandrakona while he was returning to Kolkata after attending a political event in the Purulia district.
Adhikari alleged that after his convoy passed the four-point crossing in the Chandrakona Road Market area, some Trinamool Congress activists abruptly obstructed the road while displaying their party flags.
He further claimed that ruling party supporters assaulted his convoy using bamboo sticks and targeted the bulletproof vehicle. Despite the ongoing violence, he stated that local police failed to arrive at the scene.
Afterward, Adhikari's convoy managed to escape, and he immediately went to the Chandrakona Police outpost, where he remained seated on the floor.
This is not the first incident involving attacks against the LoP's convoy.
In August 2025, Adhikari's convoy faced a similar attack in Cooch Behar, North Bengal, where individuals allegedly affiliated with the Trinamool Congress attempted to block his vehicles.
