Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 4 (NationPress) An FIR has been lodged against the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, at a police station in Kolkata on Wednesday, following a complaint that accuses him of making statements with communal implications during the Dol Yatra festival.
On Tuesday, Adhikari participated in the festival alongside monks, local BJP workers, and voters from the Bhabanipur Assembly Constituency, which is currently represented by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
While engaging with voters in Bhabanipur, Adhikari issued public warnings regarding the perils of "pseudo-secularism" and "atheism," urging for a "greater Hindu unity" ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Subsequently, on Tuesday, youth leader of the CPI-M, Sainik Sur, filed an official complaint at Ballygunge Police Station within the South Division of Kolkata Police, alleging that Adhikari's remarks were communally charged. Following this complaint, an FIR was officially registered against him.
In his complaint, a copy of which is accessible to IANS, Sur contended that the opposition leader's comments were not only politically incendiary but also had the potential to incite communal bias and animosity against secular and atheist individuals.
Sur expressed concerns that Adhikari's remarks had already sparked unrest and protests among the populace. He stated, "These statements threaten public order. Maintaining communal harmony is crucial for peaceful coexistence in our diverse society, which is now at risk due to these comments," he later informed reporters.
Additionally, he accused media outlets of allegedly amplifying Adhikari's "communally sensitive" remarks.
The youth CPI-M leader urged law enforcement to take suitable action against Adhikari in accordance with legal standards to uphold constitutional principles and mentioned that similar complaints against him would be filed in other police stations across the state.
