Kolkata, April 8 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court, on Tuesday, provided the West Bengal Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari with the green light to visit Mothabari in Malda district, a region recently affected by communal strife.

Earlier this month, Adhikari approached the single-judge bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh at the Calcutta High Court, seeking authorization amid concerns that the local police might obstruct his visit, fearing it could escalate tensions.

On Tuesday, Justice Ghosh granted the visit under specific conditions. According to the court's decree, the Leader of the Opposition is allowed to visit Mothabari with his security team on April 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

However, his movements will be limited to areas under the jurisdiction of the Mothabari Police Station.

The court has mandated that the local police be informed in advance about the number of vehicles in the Leader of the Opposition's convoy.

Additionally, the court has prohibited any rallies or processions on that day concerning the visit of the Leader of the Opposition.

Justice Ghosh also instructed the Malda district police superintendent to closely monitor the situation on the day of Adhikari’s visit to Mothabari, emphasizing the need for immediate deployment of forces in case of disturbances.

Previously, Adhikari had appealed to Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, asking him to instruct the state government to position Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Mothabari.

Authorities reported that 61 individuals have been arrested linked to the communal unrest in Mothabari, with a total of 61 cases filed. While the state police asserted that the situation in Mothabari is now stable, the Leader of the Opposition has disputed these claims.

He argued that if the situation were indeed under control, the local police would not have barred opposition leaders and media personnel from accessing the troubled area.
