Kolkata, March 28 (NationPress) A division bench of the Calcutta High Court, on Friday, requested reports from the district administration regarding the situation in Mothabari in West Bengal's Malda district concerning purported attacks on Hindus.
The petition highlights claimed "attacks on individuals of a specific religious community by members of another community".
The West Bengal BJP lodged a petition at the division bench of Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das seeking the court’s intervention. During the hearing on Friday, the division bench instructed the district magistrate and police superintendent of Malda to present a report to the court by April 3.
In the petition submitted by state BJP leader and senior counsel, Calcutta High Court Kaustav Bagchi, there was also a plea for the court to order the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel in Mothabari until the situation is fully stabilized.
Reports indicate that while the situation in Mothabari is presently under control, the division bench sought clarity on the events that transpired.
Earlier, Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, disclosed that he had sent a letter to Governor C.V. Ananda Bose urging him to instruct the state government to deploy CAPF at Mothabari due to extensive attacks on Hindus.
The Leader of Opposition accused the West Bengal government and the ruling Trinamool Congress of orchestrating a scheme for “Greater Bangladesh” through appeasement politics.
Adhikari also claimed to the media that the perpetrators in Mothabari acted without restraint, looting and vandalizing the properties of Hindus.
"Their targets were Hindus. This is why I believe that deploying CAPF is the sole solution to manage the situation, as local police have failed to curb the vandalism and lawlessness. The state police acted like ‘helpless puppets,’ merely pleading with the miscreants. The miscreants took over the main roads and vandalized numerous vehicles unchecked,” the Leader of Opposition added.
