Kolkata, June 30 (NationPress) A significant public interest litigation was initiated in the Calcutta High Court on Monday concerning the recent incident of a law student being raped on her college premises in Kasba, south Kolkata, last week.
A division bench comprising Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das has instructed the petitioners to notify other involved parties regarding the matter.
The petitioners, Soumya Subhra Roy and Sayan Bandopadhyay, both advocates practicing in the Calcutta High Court, have requested a fast-track hearing on this case.
The hearing is anticipated to take place at the division bench on July 3.
This public interest litigation comprises three main appeals. The first demands a court-monitored investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), supervised by a retired judge from the Calcutta High Court.
The second appeal seeks judicial intervention to guarantee the complete safety of women on college and university grounds throughout the state. The third calls for comprehensive CCTV surveillance across all college and university premises.
Three individuals have been implicated in the case: Monojit Mishra, Jaib Ahmed, and Pramit Mukhopadhyay. Notably, Mishra is a former student of the institution, while the others are currently enrolled. Initial investigations have uncovered Mishra's criminal history, which the college authorities allegedly overlooked when granting him a temporary position.
In response to the incident, the college's administration has chosen to suspend all classes indefinitely and keep the premises closed until further notice.
“All B.A.LL.B and LL.M (General and Honours) classes of South Calcutta Law College will be suspended, and the college premises will remain shut for all students until further notice as decided by the Governing Body,” stated an official notice from the college authorities.
