Kolkata, March 26 (NationPress) A single-judge Bench of the Calcutta High Court has granted authorization for a rally in Baruipur-Paschim, the Assembly constituency of Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay on Wednesday. The rally is set to occur on Thursday afternoon.

The High Court also allowed Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari to stage a protest outside the office of the superintendent of Baruipur Police District following the rally on Thursday afternoon.

After being denied police authorization for the rally and demonstration, Adhikari approached the single-judge Bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh on Tuesday.

In his petition, Adhikari alleged that the district police had refused to permit the rally scheduled for March 27.

The matter was heard on Wednesday, and at the conclusion, Justice Ghosh granted the LoP permission to proceed with his planned events on Thursday.

However, the Bench imposed several conditions on the rally and demonstration.

Firstly, the rally and demonstration must be conducted between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Secondly, the number of participants in the planned protest cannot exceed 1,000.

The judge also determined that the maximum number of microphones allowed during the protest is 25, and they should not be operated in hospital zones.

Previously, on March 19, Adhikari attempted to hold a rally in the Baruipur-Paschim Assembly, which coincided with an event organized by the ruling Trinamool Congress.

This led to several altercations and exchanges of slogans between Trinamool Congress and BJP legislators over the simultaneous events in the area. Following the violence that ensued, the LoP had to withdraw and cancel his planned protest.

On Wednesday, Justice Ghosh also instructed the police to submit a report regarding the attack on the LoP’s convoy on March 19.

Adhikari's protest in the Baruipur-Paschim constituency on that day was aimed at addressing alleged discrimination faced by BJP legislators within the Assembly during the session.

The LoP accused the Speaker of demonstrating a one-sided approach to the House proceedings by suspending Opposition legislators, including himself, from attending.

Subsequently, the LoP intended to organize a similar protest at the Baruipur-Paschim Assembly on March 27. However, after police denied permission, he sought intervention from the Calcutta High Court.
