Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Sudhanshu Trivedi on Friday, 30 May launched a pointed attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of deliberately omitting a key word from a courtroom statement by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to distort the government's position on the NEET-UG examination paper leak controversy. The BJP's broadside signals an aggressive counter-offensive as political temperatures over the exam irregularities continue to rise.

The Alleged Misquotation

According to Trivedi, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had stated in court that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally concerned and supervising the 'Paper Leak Issue'. Trivedi alleged that Rahul Gandhi selectively dropped the word 'Issue' from that statement, creating the misleading impression that the Prime Minister was personally supervising the paper leak itself rather than the broader controversy surrounding it.

In a post on social media platform X, Trivedi wrote: 'The problem with Rahul Gandhi is that, until now, he was unable to comprehend the Issue; now, he is unable to even read the word Issue itself.' He described Gandhi's conduct as 'clueless, issueless, and shameless.'

BJP's Assertion on Government Vigilance

Trivedi was emphatic that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government remains fully engaged on the matter. 'Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally extremely sensitive to this matter and is maintaining a strict vigil,' he asserted. He accused the Opposition of 'low-level shamelessness' in selectively editing official statements to construct a false narrative and mislead the public.

Poetic Barb at Congress

Trivedi also directed a Hindi verse at Gandhi, saying: 'Gandhi ne jise mehnaton, kar-kar ke banaya, Rahul ne us party ki, maachis laga ke rakh di. Kya kaha gaya, aur, jaane kya usne bataya, Qasid ne to paigham ki, maachis laga ke rakh di.' The verse translates loosely as: the party that Mahatma Gandhi built through toil and sweat, Rahul Gandhi has reduced to ashes by setting it ablaze with a matchstick — and in doing so, the messenger has burned the message itself.

The Broader NEET-UG Row

The exchange comes amid sustained political heat over reported irregularities in the NEET-UG 2024 examination, which affects lakhs of students seeking admission to medical colleges across India. The Union government has repeatedly assured strict action against those responsible, while the Opposition has accused it of mismanaging a crisis with far-reaching consequences for the country's youth. This is the latest in a series of escalating confrontations between the BJP and the Indian National Congress (INC) over the examination system's integrity.

Trivedi reiterated that the Modi government remains committed to upholding the sanctity of competitive examinations and delivering justice to affected students. The political battle over NEET-UG shows no sign of abating as both sides dig in ahead of key legislative and electoral developments.
