Kolkata, Feb 17 (NationPress) The most articulate members of the BJP’s legislative assembly in West Bengal are frequently targeted during significant House sessions, stated the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari regarding the one-month suspension of four party legislators on Monday.
“The strategy of suspension has been ongoing for quite some time. The treasury bench primarily focuses on the opposition leader and the most outspoken legislators on critical matters during pivotal House sessions. Typically, it is the most articulate speakers on the floor who are singled out,” LoP Adhikari informed reporters.
In addition to Adhikari, the other three suspended BJP members included fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul, Bankim Ghosh, and Biswanath Karak.
The Leader of the Opposition further asserted that these legislators faced targeting and suspension without just cause. “Biswanath Karak was not present in the Assembly when our protest occurred. Ghosh protested from his seat and did not move to the well of the House. Paul also stayed at his chair. This marks the fourth instance since 2021 where BJP legislators, including the opposition leader, have faced suspension from the House,” Adhikari remarked.
He added that he was scheduled to engage in the debate on the Governor's speech at the onset of the budget session on Tuesday, and thus, he was suspended the day prior to prevent him from voicing his opinions in the House.
The four BJP legislators were suspended following their protest after Agnimitra Paul's adjournment motion regarding attacks on various Hindu religious festivals in the state, particularly during the Saraswati Puja earlier this month. However, the motion was not accepted for discussion, even though Paul was permitted to present it on the House floor.
The Speaker of the House, Biman Bandopadhyay, stated to reporters that the four BJP legislators were suspended for exhibiting disruptive behavior, including tearing up Assembly documents and throwing the pieces towards the Speaker’s chair.
