Kolkata, Feb 17 (NationPress) The Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, Biman Bandopadhyay, has announced the suspension of four BJP legislators, including the Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, from the Assembly proceedings for a month.
The other three suspended members are Agnimitra Paul, a fashion designer-turned-politician, Bankim Ghosh, and Biswanath Karak.
During the resumption of the ongoing budget session, Paul introduced an adjournment motion to discuss the violence against various Hindu religious festivals in the state, particularly the recent Saraswati Puja.
While the Speaker permitted her to present the adjournment motion, he refused to allow any debate on the matter, which angered the BJP legislators. The party's MLAs, led by the Leader of the Opposition, moved to the well of the house, initiating protests and chanting slogans.
Chaos ensued in the Assembly for an extended period, prompting the BJP legislators to walk out. They then gathered in the Assembly's lawns, continuing their protests.
The Speaker informed the media that the suspensions were a result of the legislators' disorderly conduct within the house. 'They ripped up Assembly documents and hurled the fragments in my direction,' he stated.
Adhikari expressed his belief that he was intentionally excluded from the Assembly for a month to allow Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to present her address on the Governor's speech without opposition.
He remarked, 'Tomorrow, she will present her address without anyone contesting its content. That is precisely the goal of the treasury bench. With the Leader of the Opposition absent, all party legislators will boycott the Assembly proceedings during this time.'
Adhikari also stated that while the Chief Minister addresses the house, he will broadcast his response live on his social media platform.
'It is likely that the authorities will broadcast the Chief Minister's speech live from the Assembly. At that moment, the BJP's legislative members will gather outside the Assembly, and I will address the public live on my social media page,' he concluded.
