Kolkata, Feb 7 (NationPress) Chaos ensued in the West Bengal Assembly on the final day of the Budget Session on Saturday as the Treasury Bench initiated a breach of privilege motion against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator and fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul. This motion was prompted by a statement she made in the House the previous day, which was perceived to have offended minority sentiments.

On that day, after the state's Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay proposed the privilege motion against Paul, BJP legislators began to voice their protests.

“Our legislator sought to clarify her remarks, and she was permitted to do so by the Speaker of the House. Yet, the breach of privilege motion was still introduced, allegedly at the behest of Cabinet members from the minority community,” stated BJP legislator Mihir Goswami.

Initially, BJP legislators protested within the Assembly before walking out while chanting slogans. After exiting the House, they continued their demonstrations on the Assembly lawn, raising their voices.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Biman Bandopadhyay, has referred the breach of privilege motion to the Assembly's Privilege Committee, which will determine the subsequent steps regarding this issue.

Additionally, on that Saturday, the West Bengal government introduced a motion to rename Murshidabad University to Murshidabad Maharaja Krishnath University, which was subsequently approved. This university was formed by elevating Krishnath College through the Murshidabad University Act, 2018. Established in 1853, Krishnath College is one of the oldest and most esteemed institutions in West Bengal, founded by Maharaja Krishnath to symbolize the ideals of social reform, education, and cultural integration.

Renaming the university in his honor offers a unique and proud historical identity, distinguishing it from other state universities and firmly rooting it in the correct historical context.

Point of View

It is essential to recognize the implications of this incident within the broader political discourse in India. The uproar in the West Bengal Assembly highlights the delicate balance between political expression and the sensitivities surrounding minority sentiments. It raises important questions about legislative procedures and the responsibilities of elected officials in a diverse democracy.
