Kolkata, Feb 20 (NationPress) A breach of privilege motion has been initiated against actor-turned-BJP legislator Hiran Chatterjee in the West Bengal Assembly on Thursday. This motion arises from allegations that he accused the state government of acquiring awards for its developmental projects in exchange for substantial payments.

The motion was presented against Chatterjee, who represents the Kharagpur (Sadar) Assembly constituency in West Midnapore district, by Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya. The Assembly Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay accepted the notice.

Chatterjee is the second BJP legislator to face a breach of privilege motion this week during the ongoing first round of the Budget session of the Assembly, which concluded on Thursday.

On February 18, state Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay filed a similar motion against the Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. This was due to his alleged misleading statements to the media regarding his one-month suspension from the house, which was attributed to his unruly behavior.

During the discussion on the state Budget proposals for 2025-26 on Wednesday, Chatterjee alleged that the state government expended a total of Rs 11.26 lakh for 40 Skoch Awards linked to various developmental projects.

The Deputy Speaker Asish Banerjee, who was presiding over the session, requested Chatterjee to provide supporting documentation for his claims to the Assembly.

On Thursday, while submitting the notice for the breach of privilege motion, Minister Bhattacharya asserted that Chatterjee had not yet provided the requested supporting documents.

Chatterjee countered that he would submit the necessary documentation if formally requested in writing by the Assembly authorities. He also maintained that his statements made in the house were grounded in the contents of the CAG reports and that he possesses the requisite supporting documents.
