Is the BJP Targeting Officers Who Reject Genuine Form-7 Applications?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 23 (NationPress) The West Bengal faction of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has initiated a campaign to pinpoint booth-level officers (BLOs), electoral registration officers (EROs), and assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) who are allegedly refusing to accept valid Form-7 applications. This list of non-compliant electoral officials will be submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Form-7 applications are utilized for removing names of deceased, duplicate, and relocated voters, among others, from the electoral roll.
As per the state BJP president and Rajya Sabha member, Samik Bhattacharya, the resistance to accepting Form-7 applications emerged during the enumeration phase, which is the initial level of the tri-phase Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. He claims that many BLOs acted under the influence of the ruling Trinamool Congress, thereby rejecting valid Form-7 applications.
This led to numerous names of deceased, duplicate, and shifted voters remaining on the draft electoral roll published on December 16 of the previous year.
Bhattacharya further noted that in the ongoing second phase of the revision, which focuses on claims and objections related to the draft voters' list, the same issues persist. Some BLOs, along with certain EROs and AEROs, are reportedly still refusing valid Form-7 applications.
“The main objective appears to be ensuring that numerous names of deceased, duplicate, and relocated voters are included in the final voters' list, which could facilitate fraudulent voting on polling day,” Bhattacharya remarked.
“We are in the process of identifying these electoral officers. We have even pinpointed some officers from the West Bengal Civil Service, many of whom still have 15 to 18 years of service remaining. We are aware of their addresses, and actions will be taken against them,” Bhattacharya stated.
In contrast, the leadership of the Trinamool Congress alleges that the BJP's true motive is to submit Form-7 applications in bulk, leading to the removal of legitimate voters from the final electoral list.
The final voters' list is scheduled for publication on February 14; however, indications from the ECI suggest a potential extension of the deadline. Following the final list's publication, the Commission is expected to announce the polling dates for the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal later this year.
