Kolkata, Nov 11 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has achieved a significant milestone by successfully distributing enumeration forms to 75 percent of voters in West Bengal, just one week into the three-phase Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative. Meanwhile, the election authority has initiated strict measures against Booth Level Officers (BLOs) for breaching procedural guidelines.

As per the statistics released by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal, a total of 5.85 crore voter enumeration forms have been delivered across the state as of Monday at 6 p.m.

According to the electoral roll dated October 27, 2025, the total number of voters in the state is 7,66,37,529. Officials from the CEO’s office expressed confidence in completing the distribution process shortly.

Nonetheless, concerns remain regarding the distribution rate of enumeration forms, specifically about how many forms reached voters directly and how many were distributed by BLOs from designated locations.

The ECI has commenced actions against BLOs for procedural discrepancies, serving show-cause notices to eight officers who reportedly distributed forms from a single location rather than conducting door-to-door deliveries as mandated.

As of Monday afternoon, the CEO's office has received 1,45,744 applications from various political parties for appointing booth-level agents (BLAs). Out of these, 1,44,657 are requests for BLA-2 positions and 1,087 for BLA-1 roles.

A BLA-1 serves as a representative for a political party at the Assembly constituency level, while a BLA-2 represents the party at individual polling booths.

The Trinamool Congress leads with 52,068 BLA applications, comprising 51,888 for BLA-2s and 180 for BLA-1s.

The Bharatiya Janata Party follows closely with 45,960 applications, while the Communist Party of India-Marxist has submitted 35,576 and the Congress 10,263.

The first phase of the three-phase SIR in West Bengal commenced on November 4 and is anticipated to conclude by March next year.

The last SIR in the state took place in 2002. Voters missing their names or their parents' names from the 2002 electoral roll will need to provide one of the eleven specified documents by the ECI to secure their names in the updated voter list.

Point of View

The rapid progress made by the ECI in West Bengal is commendable. However, the scrutiny of BLOs highlights a critical need for accountability in the electoral process. This approach not only reinforces the integrity of the elections but also assures voters that their participation is valued and protected.
