BJP urges ECI to defer Tripura SIR ahead of Sep 28 Village Committee polls
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura has formally urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to postpone the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, citing a scheduling conflict with the Village Committee elections set for 28 September in the state's tribal areas.
The BJP's Request
A BJP delegation led by Rajya Sabha member Rajib Bhattacharjee, a former state BJP president, submitted a letter to state election officials on 3 September, requesting that the SIR exercise be deferred until after the Village Committee polls conclude. The letter is to be forwarded to the ECI for a final decision.
Bhattacharjee explained that during the Village Committee elections within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), most officials — including Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Booth Level Agents (BLAs) of political parties — would be fully occupied with the electoral process. 'The SIR exercise can be undertaken after the Village Committee elections are over. The state election officials would forward our letter to the ECI for taking the next course of action,' he told reporters.
The SIR Timeline
Tripura Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Brijesh Panday had earlier announced that the SIR for all 60 Assembly constituencies in Tripura is scheduled to begin on 5 September and conclude with the final publication of electoral rolls on 23 December 2026. Draft electoral rolls are set to be published on 21 October 2026.
The qualifying date for the SIR is 1 October 2026. Under the process, BLOs are required to conduct house-to-house visits from 15 September to 14 October, making three visits to every household to distribute and collect pre-filled Enumeration Forms. The ECI has already conducted training programmes for BLOs to ensure error-free rolls.
Tripura currently has 28.97 lakh electors — 14.52 lakh male and 14.45 lakh female — spread across 3,356 polling stations.
The Village Committee Elections
The 28 September polls will cover 4,597 seats across 2,634 constituencies in 587 Village Committees — the equivalent of Gram Panchayats in non-TTAADC areas — within the TTAADC. Notably, these elections are being held after a gap of 10 years, making them particularly significant for the tribal belt.
The TTAADC administers nearly two-thirds of Tripura's total geographical area of 10,491 sq km and is home to more than 12.16 lakh people, of whom nearly 84 per cent belong to indigenous tribal communities. It is considered the second most important constitutional and political body in the state, after the 60-member Legislative Assembly.
What Happens Next
The ECI is yet to respond to the BJP's deferment request. If the SIR proceeds as scheduled from 5 September, BLOs would be required to simultaneously prepare for the Village Committee polls — a logistical challenge the BJP argues is unworkable. The outcome of the ECI's decision will determine whether Tripura's electoral roll revision faces its first postponement in this cycle.
