Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has swept the Kota Municipal Corporation mayoral election in Rajasthan, with Anusuiya Goswami elected as the new Mayor on 25 September 2026. Goswami secured 65 votes against the Indian National Congress (Congress) candidate's 35 votes, handing BJP a commanding win in one of Rajasthan's major urban bodies.

Key Results Across Rajasthan

Beyond Kota, BJP also claimed the Jaipur mayoral post, with Sunil Kothari winning that election. The result of the Jodhpur mayoral contest remained awaited at the time of writing.

At the municipal chairperson level, Congress's Sushil Kumar Meedha was elected chairperson of Shrivijaynagar municipality in Sri Ganganagar district, while BJP's Jitendra Chopra won the Suket municipality chairperson election in Kota district by a razor-thin margin of one vote.

Voting Process and Timeline

Voting for the mayoral posts in Jaipur and Jodhpur commenced at 10:00 am and continued until 2:00 pm, after which vote counting began. In Jodhpur, BJP councillors departed by bus shortly after casting their votes and were reportedly camped ahead of the Deputy Mayor election scheduled for Saturday.

Congress Protest Outside Jaipur Corporation

The Jaipur election was not without controversy. A protest broke out outside the Jaipur Municipal Corporation premises after Congress MLA Rafiq Khan was allegedly stopped from entering the building. Khan confronted police personnel at the main gate and subsequently staged a sit-in protest on the road, alleging that BJP leaders were being allowed inside while he, despite being an elected MLA, was being barred from entry.

Congress MLAs Rafiq Khan and Amin Kagzi, along with Jaipur City District President Sunil Sharma, joined the sit-in. Congress leaders Archana Sharma and Pushpendra Bhardwaj also arrived at the protest site. Leaders raised slogans alleging irregularities in the voting process. Khan further questioned why individuals who had contested Assembly elections on BJP tickets were permitted inside.

Member of Parliament Manju Sharma dismissed the protest, saying Congress leaders were acting out of desperation and asserting that no one had prevented them from taking their seats.

Section 163 Restrictions in Shrivijaynagar

The district administration imposed restrictions across the Shrivijaynagar municipal area under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in connection with the Municipal Council chairperson vote count. The order, directed to be publicised by District Magistrate and Collector Dr Amit Yadav, banned victory rallies, processions, demonstrations, and unnecessary public gatherings during the period. The administration stated that maintaining law and order during and after the counting process was its foremost priority.

With Jodhpur results still pending and the Deputy Mayor vote in that city set for Saturday, the political churn in Rajasthan's urban local bodies is far from over.
