Will Action Be Taken Against Rebels, Including the New Mayor?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 20 (NationPress) BJP State President Ravindra Chavan announced on Friday that the party will initiate measures against Narayan Chaudhary and the corporators who backed him for defying the party directive during the mayoral election of the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation.
Chavan informed the media that the local BJP committee in Bhiwandi had put forward Narayan Chaudhary’s name for the mayoral role with a strong majority.
As a result, the party requested Chaudhary to submit his nomination. However, after considerable deliberation, the BJP leadership at the state level ultimately chose Sneha Patil as the party's mayoral nominee to circumvent local conflicts.
“In light of Chaudhary's local disagreements with Vilas Patil from the Konark Vikas Aghadi, the party leadership opted to alter the mayoral candidate at the state level to avert disputes and safeguard the party's interests. Even after this decision, numerous attempts were made until the very end to deter Chaudhary and the corporators who supported him from rebelling,” stated Chavan.
Despite these efforts, they were unsuccessful.
Chavan's warning came mere hours after, in an unexpected turn of events, rebel BJP candidate Narayan Chaudhary secured the Mayor's position in the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC).
In spite of a last-minute strategic maneuver by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Chaudhary achieved a notable victory with 48 votes, bolstered by a robust cross-party coalition and a fracture within the BJP.
The election was rife with high-stakes drama from the outset. The Shinde’s Shiv Sena withdrew both its candidates, Balaram Chaudhary and Suchita Rupesh Mhatre, to support Vilas R. Patil, the former Mayor and head of the Konark Vikas Aghadi. However, this move failed to gather sufficient strength to thwart Narayan Chaudhary.
In a shocking twist, six BJP corporators broke away to support Chaudhary, joining forces with the Congress and the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) to secure his victory.
Previously, several candidates had submitted nominations, including Adv. Mayuresh Vilas Patil, Pratibha Patil, Javed Dalvi (Bhiwandi Vikas Aghadi), and Tariq Momin (Congress).
During a special general body meeting, Presiding Officer and Thane District Collector Shrikant Panchal confirmed that all nominations were valid.
Candidates were allotted a 15-minute window to withdraw.
Following this, Tariq Momin, Javed Dalvi, Suchita Mhatre, Balaram Chaudhary, Mayuresh Patil, and Pratibha Patil withdrew their nominations, paving the way for the climactic battle.
