Bengaluru, July 21 (NationPress) In a strong rebuttal against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister and Congress State President D.K. Shivakumar stated on Monday that the BJP is attempting to undermine the Congress-led administration in the state regarding the GST controversy.
During a media interaction near his residence in Sadashivanagar, Shivakumar addressed questions concerning the ongoing issue.
"The BJP is trying to consume the banana and then wipe it on our noses by serving GST notices to small vendors," he remarked, directing his criticism towards the opposition BJP.
He elaborated that the BJP-led Central government had established an annual turnover threshold of Rs 40 lakh in 2019, directing all state administrations to adhere to it. "The BJP government needs to cease its harassment of the underprivileged. There are countless small traders engaged in the sale of vegetables, fruits, tender coconuts, and flowers. Currently, 14,000 vendors have received notices. Our leader Rahul Gandhi has previously voiced his concerns regarding GST. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah intends to confer with officials to assess how we can assist the populace and offer suitable guidance," Shivakumar stated.
When asked if the state administration would communicate with the Centre regarding the matter, he affirmed, "We will assuredly reach out. Justice must be served for our citizens. Karnataka contributes the highest GST, which is placing a burden on our impoverished and middle-class traders."
In response to whether the notices stemmed from the Chief Minister setting targets for officials, Shivakumar clarified, "Notices have been issued by officials based on the regulations established by the Central GST Council. These notices are a result of pressure from the central committee."
Regarding the upcoming visit of Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala to the state, he mentioned, "On July 25, the Chief Minister (Siddaramaiah) and I will be traveling to Delhi. The Parliament session is currently in progress. That is all the information I have for now," he added.
Shivakumar also communicated that he would be unavailable for meetings for the next three days due to other obligations.
He expressed his regret for any inconvenience caused and requested that no one takes this the wrong way in a statement to the media.
On Sunday, Shivakumar pointed out that small traders and street vendors are struggling due to the GST implemented by the BJP government at the Centre.
"Notices are being dispatched to all businesses exceeding Rs 40 lakh in turnover, impacting tender coconut sellers, vegetable vendors, etc. This is a direct outcome of the Union government's actions. Traders need not panic; we will undertake necessary measures to safeguard their interests," he added.
"We have lodged multiple requests with the Centre for funds over the past two years, yet none of the BJP MPs are advocating for the state. They show no concern for the impoverished population. Karnataka receives only Rs 13 for every Rs 100 it contributes to the Central government as taxes," he concluded.
