Karnataka BJP MP Poojary slams Congress over SIR confusion, court remarks
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Kota Srinivas Poojary on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, alleged that the Congress and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, lacked clarity on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Speaking at the BJP state headquarters, Jagannath Bhavan, in Malleshwaram, Bengaluru, Poojary accused the party of creating confusion and obstructing constitutionally mandated institutions from discharging their duties.
Contradictions in Congress's Stance
Poojary singled out what he described as a fundamental contradiction in the Congress position on the Supreme Court. He alleged that the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president had claimed the Supreme Court and its judges were functioning like BJP spokespersons, while the Kerala Congress had also publicly criticised Supreme Court judges — even as the party simultaneously announced it would approach the same court over the SIR issue.
'On the one hand, they make such statements against the judiciary, and on the other, they talk about approaching the Supreme Court on SIR. This reflects their confused mindset,' Poojary alleged.
Congress Accused of Contempt and Obstruction
The BJP MP further charged that Congress leaders were speaking about protecting the Constitution while making statements that, in his view, amounted to contempt of court and disparagement of the Supreme Court. He also alleged that the party was unnecessarily blaming the Union government and obstructing its functioning. Poojary urged the Congress to introspect rather than issue statements that could mislead the public, arguing the party had failed in its role as the Opposition.
SC/ST Reservation Verdict and BJP's Advice
On a separate issue, Poojary addressed the Karnataka High Court's decision to quash enhanced reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). He urged the state government to challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court and mount a strong legal defence. The enhanced quota, he noted, was introduced during the tenure of former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on the basis of a report by retired Justice Nagamohan Das, which had taken into account the population of the SC and ST communities. 'If proper arguments are presented in the Supreme Court, the enhanced reservation can be protected,' Poojary said.
New Governor, Drought Relief, and Other Remarks
Poojary also welcomed the appointment of a woman as the new Governor of Karnataka, describing the appointee as an experienced individual who had previously served on the National Commission for Backward Classes. He expressed hope that her experience would benefit the state and strengthen democracy. Separately, he flagged the distress caused by drought to both people and livestock, urging state ministers and legislators to make relief measures a priority.
The remarks come amid an escalating political battle between the BJP and the ruling Congress in Karnataka over the SIR process, which critics argue could affect voter rolls ahead of upcoming elections.
