BJP MLA Ratna Debnath bars TMC entrants amid West Bengal post-poll violence
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA-elect Ratna Debnath on Friday, 8 May alleged that Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists are disguising themselves as BJP supporters to carry out post-poll violence in West Bengal, and vowed that no TMC member would be permitted to join her party. Debnath, who won from the Panihati Assembly constituency, is also the mother of the trainee doctor who was sexually assaulted and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Key Allegations
Speaking to news agency IANS, Debnath alleged that TMC workers are donning saffron colours to pass as BJP members and engaging in acts of vandalism across Panihati. "Few activists of her party are putting saffron colour on themselves and indulging in violence," she said. She was unequivocal in her response: "I will not allow anyone from the Trinamool to enter my party. No miscreant will enter."
Debnath directed her criticism at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose All India Trinamool Congress (AITC/TMC) has faced repeated allegations of post-election intimidation in previous electoral cycles. "Our former Chief Minister's time is over but still she has refused to resign, saying she has not lost the polls. All this is the result of her madness," Debnath alleged.
Bomb Blast and Injuries in Panihati
Debnath confirmed that a bomb blast occurred at Ward No. 14 of the Panihati constituency following the election results. "Four people had to be admitted to the hospital. One even had to undergo surgery," she said. She added that she has filed complaints about the violence at two police stations in the area.
Debnath also recounted a conversation with police officers who told her that those involved had claimed to be close to her. "I told them that being 'close' does not mean anything — even if I do something wrong, I should be treated according to the law," she said, underlining that no personal association would shield wrongdoers.
Murder of Suvendu Adhikari's Aide
Debnath also addressed the reported killing of Chandranath Rath, the executive assistant of senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari. She described it as a "pre-planned murder" and said she was personally devastated by the news. "He used to visit our house, even without Suvendu Da, and that is why I am not able to accept his death," she said, calling Rath a "nice person."
Plans for Panihati Constituency
On her legislative agenda, Debnath said she has already begun receiving grievances from constituents and plans to convene a meeting to address local issues. She also stated that police officials have been informed that the administration must be allowed to function freely and without political interference.
Post-poll violence in West Bengal has been a recurring flashpoint after every major election, with both BJP and TMC trading allegations of orchestrated attacks. The current cycle of violence, if confirmed, marks yet another chapter in the state's fraught electoral history.
