Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 14 (NationPress) In a shocking turn of events in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, a 36-year-old man was reportedly murdered, his body dismembered, and disposed of in a canal after being lured under the pretense of submitting documents for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Authorities confirmed on Saturday that a Booth Level Officer (BLO) and another individual have been taken into custody in relation to this heinous act, which unfolded in Baduria. The victim's remains were discovered late Friday night in a canal, following the interrogation of the suspects and extensive search efforts. However, the head of the victim has not yet been located.
The victim has been identified as Nasir Ali (36), a resident of Papila in Baduria.
Law enforcement revealed that the arrested BLO is Rizwan Hasan Mandal, also known as Montu. He is the BLO for booth number 22 in Papila, Baduria. Another suspect, Sagar Gain, has also been apprehended.
Nasir had been unaccounted for since the evening of February 9. His family reported that he received a call from someone claiming to be an Assistant Returning Officer (ARO), requesting an urgent meeting with the BLO to discuss SIR-related documentation.
Upon receiving the call, Nasir departed home but failed to return. His family attempted to reach him, only to discover that his phone was switched off. A formal missing person report was filed at the Baduria police station shortly thereafter.
The following day, Nasir’s motorcycle and shoes were found in a canal in the Chatra area, but he remained missing. As the investigation unfolded, police apprehended Rizwan and Sagar Gain, who were later presented before the Basirhat Sub-Divisional Court, where they were remanded to five days of police custody.
During questioning, police conducted searches beneath several bridges and along canals in the Baduria region, leading to the discovery of Nasir’s body parts concealed in three separate bags within a canal. The motive behind this brutal act has yet to be clarified.
Nasir’s wife, Beauty Khatun Bibi, expressed her grief to local reporters, stating that her husband bore no known grudges against anyone. “Rizwan was a friend of my husband’s. I knew him as a friend of my husband. I demand harsh punishment for those who subjected him to such brutal torture,” she remarked.
Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing to uncover the motive and recover the remaining body parts.
